Here at Padders we run a variety of classes to suit the capabilities of the dog and the handler, be it a puppy or older dog

All classes are instructed by Jenny and where appropriate one of the more experienced handlers may be asked to assist. Each new member will have a short discussion with Jenny to understand the aims of the handler and to ensure that the dog is placed in the most appropriate class

    Puppy Class

For Puppies aged 12 to 20 weeks.

This is the most important time in your puppies’ life. In this time if your puppy is not socialized sufficiently and correctly it will have a great impact later on in it’s life. In this half hour class your puppy will learn to interact with the other puppies there with on and off lead, supervised play. The basic of the control exercises such as sit, down and lead walking.

You will also learn the correct way to interact with your puppy and have many of your questions answered about housetraining, chewing, biting etc by a professional trainer.

The class is ongoing and you don’t have to commit yourself every week but of course it is more beneficial for the puppy if you can.

    Handling Class

This class is aimed at teaching the handler to teach the dog basic control exercises and have a good knowledge of their dog and their responsibilities.

It is a six week course and your place has to be pre-booked.

The class is open for any dog aged six months upwards and the class size is limited to six only.

Although we follow a basic course this may vary each week depending on the handler and dogs individual needs and the dogs ability are taken into account. The dogs are worked in doors and outside to get the maximum benefit for you.

The Class runs for 40 minutes and the exercises are spread out over the six weeks. In this time we aim to get the handler to understand each exercise and how to relate it to their dog, moving gradually through all exercises as the weeks go on. The work covered each week is set out below    but this may change
to suit the needs of the class.

    Syllabus

Week 1.   Appropriate leads and collar to suit the individual dog. The exercise of ‘sit’ and ‘no’.

Week 2.   The basics of ‘heelwork’ or should I say ‘getting your dog to walk on a slack lead’. The use and purpose of titbits and the importance of socializing.

Week 3.   To teach the basic ‘down’. Handling and  grooming. Re capping on the sit and walking on lead.

Week 4.    The basic recall, a problem for many handlers. Also covered the basic rules on pack leadership or should we say who rules the home.

Week 5.    Combination of all exercises advancing on to how to increase your sit and down stays.

Week 6.    Looking again at individual exercises where needed and advancing on to off lead heelwork and recall where appropriate. Recapping on the basic byelaws relating to dogs, general knowledge available and where to go to next.

Over the course all handlers and members of the family are encouraged to ask questions, discuss problems that have arisen and share there achievements with their dog over the week. Extra time is available before the next class if a handler feels they want to discuss things privately.
